New York - As part of its plan to become a major supplier of communications components, Oak Industries Inc. last week agreed to acquire Lasertron Inc. for $112 million. Lasertron makes semiconductor laser modules used in fiber-optic transmission and amplification equipment.
The deal, subject to various approvals, would be Oak's third acquisition of acompany serving the communications business. Lasertron derives most of its $30 million in sales from the telecommunications market and is believed to be the main supplier of pump lasers for optical amplifiers, a key element of long-distance telephone network upgrades.
"The acquisition gives us access to customers we didn't have before, and it gives us a strong position in the telephone transmission business," said William E. Schafer, director of corporate development for Oak, Waltham, Mass.
