Boeing is striving for a chunk of what could be a multi-billion-dollar military drone market with the development of the X-45 unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV), and St. Louis could get the lion's share of the work.
Boeing workers in St. Louis would build 10 to 14 of the production model, X45Bs, for the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the U.S. Air Force. The X-45B is in the design phase, and two X-45A demonstration models have been built, with one of the two taking two test flights in May and June at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The unmanned fighter planes could carry up to 3,000 pounds of bombs.
