IRVING - Building-materials giant Owens Corning will spend $40 million to double capacity at its existing Irving roofing plant and plans to hire 75 more employees.
The new capacity will be used to produce a high-style, premium asphalt shingle that is growing in popularity for residential housing, particularly in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. That will make Owens Coming in Irving more competitive with other manufacturers here who are already making the shingle.
"The business has just gotten so big locally and regionally that we decided to expand the capacity here," said Larry Dunn, manager of the Owens Corning plant in Irving. "The D-FW area is the largest market for this shingle, which is used on about 80% of new housing here."
