* Novartis was ranked No. 1 at meeting the overall needs of managed care in Scott-Levin's Managed Care Pharmacy Executive Promotional Audit. Following Novartis were: Astra Merck, Zeneca, Schering and SmithKline Beecham (tie), Merck & Co., Hoechst Marion Roussel, Parke-Davis, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and American Home Products. Merck appears on ScottLevin's top 10 list for this category for the first time. Just one year ago, Merck ranked 51 out of 53 firms in its overall ability to meet managed care's needs. American Home Products (AHP) jumped from 34 to 10 in overall rankings. AHP's managed care focus is divided between the cardiovascular combination product Ziac, the antidepressant Effexor, and the estrogen replacement therapies Premarin, Prempro, and Premphase. Parke-Davis is back in the top 10 with promotions for its two new products: the cholesterol drug Lipitor, and the diabetes treatment Rezulin. SmithKline moved into fourth place with the emphasis continuing to be on the antidepressant Paxil.
