Patient interest in complementary naturopathic medicine on the rise
FOR MANY YEARS, naturopathic medicine fell into the cat egory of alternative medicine. Patients would use the services of both a naturopathic doctor (ND) and a medical doctor (MD) without informing either they were visiting the otheroccasionally with adverse results.
More recently, conventional medical practices have begun to view naturopathic medicine as complementary, rather than alternative. More and more patients are also sharing their history and experiences with all of their health-care providers.
In the future, this relationship between MDs and NDs might best be regarded as complementary, collaborative and co-operative if Ontario's provincial government follows through on the recommendations of the Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council (HPRAC).
On May 19, HPRAC recommended to Ontario's Minister of Health and Long-Term Care that naturopathic medicine be regulated under the Registered Health Professions Act. Naturopathy in Ontario is...
