EDMONTON - Canadian physicians should be alerted that those with diabetes mellitus or hypertension are subject to cognitive decline as early as their 47th birthday, says University of Alberta endocrinologist Dr. Richard Lewanczuk.
"The general thought had always been that yes, hypertension and diabetes may be a risk factor for cognitive deficits but you wouldn't really see it until people were in their seventies or older," said Dr. Lewanczuk, director of the division of endocrinology at the university and director of the hypertension clinic at the University of Alberta Hospital.
