Dr. Lyttle's case first of many to be supported by the OMA
TORONTO - The case of a London, Ont., pediatric respirologist, who successfully appealed a medical review committee (MRC) decision that he was overpaid, represents the first of a series of such appeals to be supported by the Ontario Medical Association.
And Dr. Brian Lyttle's appeal of a decision involving his general assessment billings, backed by the OMA, likely won't be the last, according to Jim Simpson of the OMA's legal services department, writing in the current issue of the Ontario Medical Review, the group's magazine for members.
The Health Services Appeal and Review Board (HSARB) reversed the MRC's decision last July after 89% of Dr. Lyttle's general assessments during the two years under review were reduced to the lower-paying code for intermediate assessments. General assessments have been the target of a growing number of physicians who have vocally opposed recent MRC decisions.
