Effervescent, energetic Egidiana Maccioni, known to just about everybody as Egi, holds a special responsibility for the success of the family's restaurants. She is now, as she has been from the start not only the wife of Sirio Maccioni of Manhattan's famed Le Cirque 2000 and the mother of Mario, Marco and Mauro of Osteria del Circo but also the guiding spirit, partner, menu planner - and sometimes referee - and what she calls "tapa buchi - if there's a hole, If ill it. " She divides her time between both restaurants and assisted her husband in the recent revamping of Le Cirque 2000.
After dropping out of high school at the age of 14 in her hometown of Montecatini-Terme, Italy, she raised her infant brother, cooked and cleaned house, while her mother sewed to augment her father's income as a baker, a skill his daughter never has forgotten.
Her culinary interests were further encouraged by Tuscan and Bolognese grandmothers, who taught the inquisitive child the wonders and delights of their respective cuisines.
At 18 she discovered a singing voice that was to take her from Montecatini to Florence and eventually to Carnegie Hall with a troupe of Italian performers. But in 1957 she met Sirio Maccioni...
