HOLLAND - The effective date of Huntington's acquisition of FMB-First Michigan Corp. has long since passed (Sept. 30), but the new merged company continues to get settled. All 14 subsidiary FMB banks now are a part of Huntington, which operates with one national bank charter and one corporate headquarters, that being in Columbus, Ohio.
Here in Michigan, the banks that formerly comprised FMB now have been assembled into Huntington National Bank, One Financial Plaza, Holland.
David Ondersma, who headed FMB for many years, is chairman of Huntington National Bank's northwest region, which encompasses Michigan and northwest Ohio. Ondersma has mentioned to Michigan Banker that the Huntington operations, now still headquartered in Holland, probably will be relocated to Grand Rapids at some point in the reasonably near future.
And, not surprisingly, some top-level personnel changes have been made. Two key FMB executives have departed. Gerry Johnson, who was president of FMB-Grand Rapids, left the company in June and is in the process of forming a de novo bank in western Michigan. And Tom Wesholski, who was senior VP with FMB and head of the HC's credit operations, recently joined Grand Bank in Grand Rapids as president.
