Over the past few years RODE Microphones has established itself as one of the world's leading manufacturers of high quality studio microphones. This, of course, is no easy feat with manufacturers like Neumann and AKG being so embedded in the tradition of the recording industry. For a relatively new manufacturer like RODE just being able to sell a few microphones is a major accomplishment. The strategy that RODE has used to break into this very tough market seems to be simple. They created high quality, great sounding microphones and have been able to sell them at a lower price than their old-school competitors.
The RODE NT 3 is the latest addition to the RODE family of microphones. When I first received the NT 3 for evaluation I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. It was one of those microphones that, by appearance only, gives you little or no clue of what you might use it for. If the microphone was long and thin like a pencil type microphone, I might think, hey, let's try it as a drum over-head or a room microphone. If it were large like a U-87, I might think, well, let's put it on vocals and if it looked...
