With technology changing so quickly and companies so eager to throw out the old in order to sell you the new, RADAR-24 is a rare species in the recording industry these days. It is a piece of recording technology with some history. RADAR-24 is the latest 24-track digital recorder from iZ Technology. The original RADAR was designed by the iZ Technology team in 1992. It was the very first stand-alone 24-track hard-disk recording system and was originally distributed by Otari. But when Otari's distribution license expired in 2000 iZ Technology regained control of distribution and later launched the RADAR-24.
All of this history is a really good thing for RADAR. It proves that the company stands behind its products and is committed to making improvements and, more importantly, keeping their customers happy.
The RADAR-24 that I tested was a hit from the word go. I took it out of the box and within a few minutes I was ready to record. The unit was laid out perfectly and all the buttons were right where I expected them to be. More importantly than this, all of the buttons did exactly what I expected them to do.
The 'Session Controller,' or remote, is sold as an option but I think that it is really a necessary tool and if you want to take full advantage of the RADAR you will want to purchase this option. Having the remote allowed me to use the unit much like a standard tape machine and provided me with fast editing tools as well as quick locator points etc.
