Welcome to the future. This is review of Yamaha's most sophisticated pro audio product to date. The PM1D live digital mixing console was unveiled in Canada this March in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. It is only one of two PM1D consoles released by Yamaha worldwide available for public viewing.
The PM1D comes in two parts, the control surface and the analog interface racks. The control surface provides control of 48 input channels with A and B inputs on each channel. With additional converter cards the surface will control up to a total of 96 channels still with A and B inputs. This formidable quantity of inputs is only surpassed by the flexibility of output control. There are 48 auxiliary, or group outputs, 24 matrix outputs and then two sets of stereo outputs for a grand total of 76 output channels.
The control surface offers an input gain pot, an auxiliary or group pot and a pan pot for each input on the surface. More detailed channel control is provided by a common input strip that services all inputs. This strip contains 4-band parametric equalization with high pass, a compressor/expander, a noise gate/ducker with frequency trigger, delay, phase reverse, input gain and input attenuation (for when multiple consoles are in use), a pan pot, 24 auxiliary (or group)...
