Bob Rock, who was recently inducted into the 2007 Canadian Music Hall of Fame in recognition of his lifetime contribution to music, was working on the new Offspring album at his recording studio in Maui right up until he had to fly to Saskatchewan to attend the ceremony at the Juno Awards.
The Canadian-born producer of such acts as Metallica, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, The Cult, and Canada's own Our Lady Peace, The Tragically Hip, Simple Plan, The Tea Party, Tal Bachman, Michael Bublé, and Bryan Adams, sought inspiration from Leonard Cohen, whom he watched receive the same honour at the 1991 JUNO Awards in Vancouver.
"When Leonard Cohen got inducted into the Hall of Fame, that was spectacular," says Reckon the phone from Hawaii, where he relocated from Vancouver in 1994. "I remember saying to [my manager] Brace Allen, 'God, if I could look as good and be quite as cool as that guy, I'd just be a happy guy' [laughs]."
Well, looking as distinguished as Cohen may be a tall order, but, at 52, Rock still looks cool, his shoulder-length hair all his; his sense of humour probably contributing to his well-being. He lives in Maui, which has to add to his happiness. He has a beautiful wife and six children, two boys and four girls, ages 11 to 28. The two eldest are on their own.
