The massive new headquarters facility announced last month by Gaithersburg biotech company MedImmune will be built in three phases, company officials say.
The 25-acre site, bordered by Quince Orchard Drive and Great Seneca Highway, can accommodate 750,000 square feet.
The first phase will consist of a 210,000-square-foot, $70 million complex, slated to be completed by the end of next year.
A three-phase buildout enables MedImmune (www.medimmune.com) to adjust its plans to changing needs. Technological innovations in the coming years, for example, could lead the company to rethink its designs and turn some planned office space into research space instead.
After phase three is completed, the new headquarters will have room for 2,200 employees. The current MedImmune headquarters, just off Interstate 270, fits about 500 workers.
"We've outgrown the buildings we're in," says Melvin Booth, president and chief operating officer of MedImmune, which develops and markets products to treat problems associated with infectious disease, immune regulation and cancer.
"We've had 72 percent growth in revenue for the last three years," he says.
