In the more than four decades since Independence, the shrinking economic pie of the Malaysian Indian community is becoming a serious cause for concern.
MUCH has been reported lately in the Press about the Malaysian Indian
community - and most of it isn't complimentary.
The screaming headlines say it all. From street crime to securing places
in public universities and the civil service, the grouses of the community
seem aplenty. Even plantation workers, who are mostly Indian, are
clamouring for minimum wages.
The community's worries seem justified, especially if seen in the
context of building an equitable Malaysian society with equal
opportunities for the disadvantaged.
In the last 15 years, the community's share of the nation's corporate
wealth has declined from around three per cent to just 1.5 per cent
currently. This has prompted the Government to ensure the community's
share of the wealth increases to three...
