As the repair jobs keep coming in, Dave Christopher, owner of Christopher's Car Care in Tallmadge, Ohio, is wondering why the same can't be true for good technicians.
"Every place you go, you see a help wanted sign," Christopher said. "Unemployment is so low, it's hard to find good techs."
Last month Christopher thought his search was over when he asked a tech to come in to work for a day on a trial basis. The tech liked the company and Christopher, satisfied with his job performance, had every intention of offering him a job. But, the tech was given an offer by his current employer that he couldn't refuse: higher pay and better benefits. So, he decided not to leave his current position.
This is precisely why it's been so hard for Christopher to fill his opening.
"A good tech is being well cared for," Christopher said. "He was a very nice young man and I was anxious to hire him, (but) I'm not going to get into a matching game." So now that he's back to square one, Christopher is coming up with some ideas for filling the position.
