Managing Engineering Knowledge. MOKA: Methodology for Knowledge-Based Engineering Applications. Melody Stokes, ed. ASME Press, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Three Park Ave., New York, NY 10016-5990. 2001. 298 pp, ISBN 0-7918-0165-9. $127; ASME members, $99.
MOKA, a methodology and a set of software tools oriented to knowledge-based engineering applications, was created under the auspices of a consortium of European academic and corporate bodies to fill the need for a common way of collecting, structuring, and formalizing the engineering knowledge associated with designs. It is intended as a practical tool to help those involved with building systems that represent knowledge, rather than a set of academic principles. This ring-bound volume is a comprehensive user's guide to the methodology, written in an accessible style with an easily navigable structure, and it includes summary margin notes, examples and case studies, numerous diagrams, and a guide to further reading.
