Revisiting Boston a few days ago, I had a good news bad news experience. Anyone who's been there recently will know all about the Big Dig. You kind of fell into it immediately after leaving Logan Airport, as soon as you'd passed through the short tunnel under the harbour: a nightmare hole, rather like one of those photographic images of a South American gold mine, without bottom or end.
And a nightmare it proved to be. The basic idea was great: to put a three-mile stretch of elevated motorway, the main north-south artery between the city's Quincy Market and the waterfront, underground. Built in the 1950s - the gung-ho era of highway construction - it...
