Univera Health and Excellus Inc. officials expect to hear this week whether their HMOs will be able to merge operations.
Univera, Buffalo's third-largest HMO, announced last September the proposed merge with Excellus Inc., a Rochester health care insurance company that includes three Blue Cross & Blue Shield plans in Central New York. The merger will create a single nonprofit insurer with assets exceeding $1.2 billion, making it the secondlargest health insurance plan in New York state.
The merger is Univera's second expansion east, following the 1999 merger with Physicians Health Plan of Syracuse.
