When Joni Kat Anderson and Matthew Cohen talk about their joint venture, JKAT Jewelry, they have a tendency to finish each other's sentences. It comes naturally for the duo, who formed the business two years ago and are engaged to be married. They work together on nearly every aspect of JKAT -- from designing the collection's necklaces, bracelets and earrings to updating and managing their Web site, jkatdesigns.com.
"We work every aspect as a team," said Cohen. The two collaboratively dream up each design, drawing from their individual backgrounds.
Cohen has a degree in cognitive science and is a singer-songwriter and musician. Anderson grew up in a family of artists and has been a sculptor since childhood.
She sculpts each design in wax, once the drawings are complete. But Cohen helps out there, as well.
"Even when I'm sculpting, Matt will come in sometimes and say, `That doesn't look quite right,' and I'll say, `You know, it doesn't,"' said Anderson.
JKAT designs are sculpted from sterling silver and many of the styles also contain stones, including black onyx, rhodonite, red coral and lapis lazuli.
Anderson and Cohen, both 32, have designed three JKAT lines that are distinct yet also easily mix with one another.
