Los Angeles Fashion Week is getting one step closer to becoming a fixture on the calendar. The TV cameras came, as did the celebs and foreign retail buyers. An auto sponsor insured a single venue for designers, while a few organizers -- including 7th on Sixth -- explored the potential of staging future events.
The Nov. 1-6 presentations offered the most formalized Fashion Week in two decades. The biggest story, in fact, didn't happen on the runway. "Audi Presents Designer Collections of Los Angeles Fashion Week" drove home the concept that staging multiple shows under one roof isn't such a bad idea. The six-hour marathon at Hollywood's Tibitz Creative Stages -- spotlighting Cornell Collins, David Cardona, Jared Gold, Eduardo Lucero, Tree and Petro Zillia -- was an ambitious first try.
Yet even with all the press, stylists and hip friends , the 400-plus guest list was noticeably short on buyers. The space-age lounge provided a welcome oasis to the weary masses, but the resources would have been better invested in models and lighting.
