Mauritius politics: General election arrives amid fragmented political field
We expect the Alliance Nationale coalition formed by the Labour Party (PTr), the Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate (PMSD) and the Mouvement Patriotique (MP) to secure a comfortable majority in the upcoming general elections on November 7th. The political elites will continue to dominate the political landscape and new emerging parties will be unsuccessful in making any significant gains in the polls. Despite growing election-related wrangling and bickering in the run-up to the polls, we expect political and social stability to remain intact.
A marriage of convenience
As per tradition in Mauritius, the main political parties have declared their alliances in the run-up to the general election to better their prospects and unseat the ruling Alliance Lepep coalition.
