A former Belk Inc. division chief has filed a federal lawsuit against the Charlotte-based retailer, contending the company discriminated against him because of his age.
David Hines, who was president of the company's northern division from November 2000 until August 2002, contends that Belk violated the Age Discrimination Employment Act when it terminated him at age 53.
In the suit. filed late last month in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Md., Hines is seeking $4 million in damages. The lawsuit contends that Belk's management reorganization in 2002 "was aimed at ridding itself of management over the age of 50 in favor of younger employees."
