When it comes to settling the score over who will own and operate a minor-league hockey franchise here next season, the puck stops with Rick Adams - or, perhaps, city leaders. The East Coast Hockey League commissioner says the league's 31-member governing body will meet and make a decision on Charlotte's hockey future March 11. At stake is whether Big Play Entertainment, owned by Hornets principals George Shinn and Ray Wooldridge, maintains the Checkers franchise or is replaced by former Checkers owners Carl Scheer and Felix Sabates.
The issue is a sticky one. If the city refuses to sign another lease with the Checkers, the league must decide whether Wooldridge and Shinn retain territorial rights for Charlotte. It must also decide if another group can move...
