Statistics of the Vietnam Geology Department shows that in the former Bac Thai Province (now split into Thai Nguyen and Bac Can), there are 259 mines and 112 mineral sites with 34 different types of minerals belonging to fuel, metal, non-metal and construction materials.
In 1996, Thai Nguyen had 22 active mines including six coal mines, five gold mines, two construction stone quarries and three non-metal mines. In addition, there were many other mines freely exploited by local people, sometimes with thousands of people focusing in areas of Dai Tu tin mine and Vo Nhai and Dong Hi gold mines.
Present existing minerals in Thai Nguyen: Fuel ore in Thai Nguyen includes anthracite and fat coal located mainly in the north-east of Thai Nguyen City with an estimated reserve of 90.535 million tonnes, of which fat coal accounts for 9.199 million tonnes.
The metal group consists of iron, tin and zinc ore and lead. The province has 40 tin and magnesium ore sites having been explored with 12 of which having a total reserve of 40.967 million tonnes. Only the Trai Cau iron mine under the Thai Nguyen Steel Company...
