For the third time in the past three decades, geography is undergoing a reappraisal and so it is timely to examine how it is confronting the break-up in its post positive phase. Four themes are noted - the questioning of the privileges of grand concepts such as History or Theory, the blurring of the genres, the spatialization of critical enquiry and the situatedness of knowledge and attentiveness to difference. The cultural turn and post modernism have tended to eschew the big picture but the editors argue that the macro approach is also necessary for an elucidation of the constitution of contemporary society and its rapid changes of the past decade.
