This is the twelfth book in the Geological Conservation Review series (GCR) set up by the Nature Conservancy Council before it was split regionally. The objective of the book was to summarize the scientific reasoning behind the designation of karstic and speleological Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).
The authors have produced a magnificent summary of the karst and cave SSSIs, together with a handful of sites not yet designated, and a few outside SSSIs. They have presented a thorough survey of the results of scientific investigations in almost every cave in the country. The resultant book updates the earlier regional series of four books on `Limestones and Caves', but it is not so detailed.
