Abstract

At least five sections were obtained from paraffin-embedded tissue specimens. Because of the retrospective nature of the study, no written informed consent from patients was obtained. [...]the study of molecular alterations in UM is currently of great scientific interest aiming at identifying possible biological factors capable of predicting a more aggressive biological behavior of the disease. According to Kaplan-Meier survival analyses, lower survival times free from metastasis were seen in patients with UM and high expression of ABCB5. [...]we suggest using ABCB5 as an easily detectable prognostic marker in primary UMs and advocate its use as a predictor of the risk of liver metastasis and as guide for monitoring and treatment.
