Troubled Kiwi International Air Lines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week in a deal that could result in the latest reincarnation of Pan American World Airways. However, before Pan Am rises, Kiwi needs to convince federal regulators that it is running a safe operation.
The Federal Aviation Administration ordered Newark, N.J.-based Kiwi to surrender its operating certificate and cancel its flight schedule as of March 24. The FAA said in a letter to the airline that its planes were in "unairworthy condition," that it failed to adequately maintain aircraft and could not operate safely without constant monitoring. The order marks the third time Kiwi has been shut down by the FAA since its founding in 1992 by former Eastern Air Lines pilots.
