The promise of education for all students within the province of Alberta is one that is taken very seriously. Considering the distances involved and the sparse populations in many regions of the province, the fact that this promise is kept so well is remarkable. Northland School Division was established to link a large number of remote communities together to provide first-class educational services and it fulfills its difficult mission every year. Other rural school jurisdictions, while not quite as geographically challenged as Northland, still must make annual decisions that balance the educational needs of local populations against the cost of supporting schools in small communities.
