Abstract

[...]plasma levels of dephosphorylated uncarboxylated MGP (dp-ucMGP), as a marker of vitamin K deficiency in CKD, is associated with cardiovascular disease and with overall survival [96], as well as with low bone mineral density and increased fracture risk [97]. In the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)–Oxford study, that included subjects with normal renal function, found that consuming a vegetarian diet was associated with lower risk of ischemic heart disease, a finding that was probably mediated by differences in non-HDL cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure [2]. [...]in a prospective cohort study by the US health care professionals that included 131,342 participants from the nurses and health professionals follow-up study with a follow-up of more than 25 years, showed that a high animal protein intake was positively associated with cardiovascular mortality, while a higher plant-based protein intake was inversely associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality [158]. [...]the meta-analysis of Kelly et al. has shown that a healthy dietary pattern, including increased fruit and vegetable, fish, legume, whole grains, and fiber intake, and reduced red meat, sodium, and refined sugar intake, is associated with lower mortality in CKD patients [126]. Dietary fiber has important health-promoting properties. Besides its well-known benefits on the gastrointestinal health, individuals with higher intakes of dietary fiber appear to be at significantly lower risk for developing coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and certain gastrointestinal diseases.
