Abstract

(Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Child abuse is a serious problem that affects our society. Children who have been victims of abuse adopt negative attitudes and lose their self-esteem. With the loss of Self-esteem they lack the opportunity to have a better quality of life. Scholars such as Lorrain B. Wallach (1996), Lorrie Wolverton (1988), Elizabeth Randolph (1993), and Mike Marlowe (1991) have used bibliotherapy as a means to help modify the attitudes of children and adults and have been successful with this technique. . Exposing children to children's literature, particularly the story genre, could help the child identify, project and sublime her ideas, promoting a change in attitude and, therefore, an improvement in her self-esteem. The increase in your self-confidence will be of great help both for your personal life and your school learning.

This study exposed eighteen Puerto Rican children, between the ages of seven and twelve, previously identified as abused, to reading children's stories in order to observe the effect it has on their Attitudes and Self-Esteem. The research was carried out at the José Archilla Cabrera School in Naranjito. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
