Bangladesh Biman Airlines' monopoly status as the country's flag carrier has ended with the launch of a new domestic carrier. Aero Bengal Airlines has begun three daily flights between Dhaka and Barisal. Additional destinations will be added to the schedule in the near future, including Shamshernagar, Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Ishurdi. The Bangladesh government decided in August 1993 to allow private airlines to operate, but only on select domestic routes.
