OFFSHORE MINING
AngloGold Ashanti became the most recent company to head offshore in the search for gold and other minerals. The company announced that it will team up with De Beers in offshore exploration and mining.
Johannesburg-based AngloGold is one of the world's biggest gold producers. It said it will have "first-mover advantage" by partnering with De Beers, a world leader in marine mining. De Beers has an established a track record mining gems from the ocean. Its De Beers Marine Namibia unit produced almost 1.06 million carats last year from waters ranging in depth from 90 to 140 m (295 to 460 ft). The company overall produced 48,1 million carats.
