Taking the latest leap in the horsepower race, Cummins h as unveiled a new 600-hp engine offering 2,050 lb-ft of maximum torque. But it's a host of Signature Series features such as dual overhead cams, an integrated engine brake delivering 600 hp of braking force, and a 50,000-mile oil drain interval that have taken centre stage.
Even skin deep, the new engine has a different look, abandoning the traditional Cummins black for a fire engine red. Indeed, the July 14 unveiling in Columbus, Ind. was rife with "red hot" references--the press conference even began in the local fire hall.
"No run is too hard. Not anymore," said automotive president Robert Cordaro, referring to the engine available by March 1998.
It's a far cry from 1932, when Cummins installed the first diesel engine in a White truck.
Incorporating a high-pressure electronically controlled fuel system, the new 15-litre engine has a bore and stroke of 137 mm by 169 mm, with a dry weight of 2,610 lb., says technical team leader Tom Stover.
The engine brake is now integrated in the head, weighing in at 20 lb. as opposed to the 100-lb. addition of traditional engine brakes.
The smaller of the Signature Series' two cams has lobes designed specifically for braking, where traditional engine brakes are activated by the injector lobe or exhaust lobe of single camshaft designs.
The Cummins Intebrake innovation will be built by Jacobs.
