Alcan permanently closed its 57-year-old smelter at Isle-Maligne, Quebec. :- In January 2001, Alcan acquired outright ownership of the Gove alumina refinery and related bauxite mine in Australia, which have a current annual capacity of 1.8 million tonnes of low-cost alumina.*Three Alcan alumina refineries and 11 of 15 Alcan smelters posted record production levels in 2000.
