For those of us Indianapolitans who prefer to flee the capital city when the Indy 500 rolls around each May, there are a number of small town day trips from which to choose.
Indiana is, after all, one whole series of them; a veritable web, in fact, connected by gauzy square after square of farmers' fields. This year, however, I chose to punctuate my flatland journey with the more erudite berg of Columbus. It had been awhile since I'd taken in the squares, spires, and quirky angles that comprise the notable architecture that makes this small Indiana city famous.
Just under an hour from Indianapolis-due south-- Interstate 65 takes you straight down to the Highway 46 turnoff. That's where things start to get interesting-at least as far as Indiana topography goes. The road bends here and there like one of those crinkly straws, occasionally dipping down or up as it passes over a creek or through an undulating forest.
