By Terry UlrickAshford magazine and journal printer Headley Brothers is to be the first in the UK to take delivery of a new Heidelberg Sunday 2000, 24 page press. The 55,000cph machine which will add both capacity and flexibility to Headley's present eight- strong stable of sheetfed and web presses is due for delivery in October."This new press will continue our development as a specialist magazine printer," says managing director Roger Pitt. He argues that moving to 24pp working will provide the eight-page jumps Headley customers require and at the same time ensure better use of existing 16-page presses by reducing oddments.Headley Brothers - the printer of Printing World - has negotiated a revised structure for its pressroom area with its GPMU chapel and is confident about its choice of machine. "We considered what was available in the marketplace very carefully indeed," says Mr Pitt.Headley Brothers has a long history of purchasing Heidelberg presses, the first installation dating back to 1954.To house the new press, and to afford future expansion Headley Brothers has built an extra 5,000 sq ft of factory and warehouse space, and a new internal perimeter service road. Also planned is a new access road linking the factory with the Ashford ring road and its direct links to Junction 9 of the M20.The Sunday 2000 will feature the new Heidelberg PCF-1 pinless combination folder, a Contiweb CS reel stand and Ecotherm drier.Headleys has also made recent investments at the front end of its operation including the Scitex Brisque system together with an Iris 2Print contract proofer, Iris 43Wide imposition proofer and a Dolev 800v imagesetter. On order are a new Scitex fileserver and the Scitex Lotem 800v ctp system.Headleys has a history dating back to 1881 when Herbert and Burgess Headley began their printing business in a small room over their father's grocery store. Then the print orders were for paper bags, billheads and circulars. Today, the firm prints mid-range magazines for many of the UK's leading publishers, tackling over 250 quarterly, monthly and weekly titles
