A corporate culture that includes dedication to the community, as well as policies to implement that dedication, netted Wild Oats Markets Inc. The Denver Business Journal's prestigious Corporate Citizen award for 2000.
The Boulder-based company (Nasdaq: OATS) was founded in 1987 and has grown to more than 100 stores in 23 states with about 9,000 full- and part-time employees. Sales in 2000 were $838.1 million, an increase of 16.2 percent over the previous year.
The company is one of the largest natural food supermarket chains in North America with stores operating under several names including Wild Oats,
Henry's Marketplace, Nature's Fresh and Nature's Northwest and Sun Harvest Market.
Not only can customers find organic food that is grown without pesticides, they can get rid of the stress of the day through in-store massages.
From the beginning, the company's mission revolved on the ideas of community, organic food, living right and taking care of the Earth.
