Regal Entertainment Group Inc. says it's based in metro Denver, but it behaves as if it's really run from Knoxville, Tenn.
The company was launched early this year by Denver entrepreneur Phil Anschutz, its biggest shareholder, and went public a few weeks ago, raising $342 million.
It's the holding company for three of the nation's largest movie theater operators Knoxville-based Regal Cinemas Corp., Edwards Theatres Inc. of Newport Beach, Calif., and United Artists Theatre Co. of Englewood, Colo.
Regal Entertainment is the country's largest theater chain with 5,886 screens in more than 500 theaters in 36 states. It controls 17 percent of the U.S. movie theater market.
The company's corporate headquarters is officially in metro Denver, according to its initial public offering prospectus, press releases and Yahoo! Finance profile. Those offices are located at UA's old headquarters at 9110 E. Nichols Ave., now in Centennial.
But Regal Entertainment's biggest business, its movie theaters, is based in Tennessee because its biggest theater chain, Regal Cinemas with about 3,660 screens, is based there. (By comparison, UA has roughly 1,570 screens and Edwards 650.)
