Abstract
On December 13, EPC 2000 comes into force. This, the first overhaul of the European Patent Convention since it was drafted in 1973, adapts almost every aspect of the original Convention. The Implementing Regulations (IR) have also been extensively redrafted to reflect the changes, as have the EPO Guidelines for Examination and fees rules. However, most of the reforms are merely tinkering with details to make life easier, according to Nicholas Fox, a patent attorney with Beresford in London who has written A Guide to the EPC 2000, published by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys. After December 13, therefore, you should be happier if you are an examiner or applicant.
