Anselm Strauss has made several significant contributions to sociological lore. The seminal ideas developed in association with awareness contexts, negotiated orders, and grounded theory will inform the activities of future generations of sociologists. These ideas have emerged from focused observations and sustained analysis; in this book, Strauss takes a different tack and theorizes without their benefit.
First he offers a statement from within an intellectual tradition and a social network that have reflected and are reflecting on the qualities of the phenomena that sociologists confront and how best to deal with them. Contrary to its stated purpose, this book does not offer a theory of social phenomena, at least not a theory in the traditional meaning of that word....
