The City of Industry is fast becoming Los Angeles County's version of the Silicon Valley with dozens of high-technology and computer companies moving into the community.
Estimates of the number of high-tech businesses in the San Gabriel Valley municipality range up to 70 or 80, with most of them having some connection to countries in Asia. Together with a few surrounding communities, some in the computer industry say that there now could be hundreds of small-to medium-sized high-tech companies in the area.
Some people in the industry say that one attraction of the area for Asian firms is a large Buddhist temple in nearby Hacienda Heights. The temple, one of the largest on the West Coast, is said to be on sacred ground and has attracted many Asians, particularly Taiwanese, to the area.
The temple is on a hill on Hacienda Boulevard in Hacienda Heights and can be seen from the surrounding community.
"I have heard that a lot of the Orientals who are Buddhists want to be able to see the temple," said Angelina Lopez, marketing communications manager for CAF Technology Inc., a computer company that moved from Alhambra to the City of Industry last July.
