The M1A1 Abrams tank made by General Dynamics (GD) proved its survivability during Operation Iraqi Freedom, with only three tanks receiving damage from enemy fire and no losses of crews, according the Army program manager.
"The M1 Abrams has lived up to its name of being the most survivable tank on the battlefield," Col. Donald Kotchman yesterday told Defense Daily during a telephone interview. "There were no crew casualties in any engagement."
Kotchman said the Army had more than 200 M1A1 Abrams tanks taking part in Operation Iraqi Freedom, assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized). More advanced M1A2 System Enhancement Package (SEP) tanks, assigned to the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized), are now entering Iraq.
