Last year, Scrantoms Book & Stationery Co. Inc. closed four stores, leaving seven.
In January, the retailer announced it was closing the Ridgemont Plaza and Pittsford Plaza stores but planned to expand product lines at remaining locations.
Then, two weeks ago, the Loehmann's Plaza store closed--the very location Scrantoms revamped last September.
That leaves four shops--in Northgate, Midtown, Penfield and Newark plazas --and that means Scrantoms, despite an ambitious growth plan unveiled two years ago, again appears to be contracting.
President and CEO Evan Brauer this week declined to answer questions about the recent closing or the company's plans.
He and wife Bonnie in spring 1990 revealed plans to expand their eight-store chain to 12 locations within a year. They said the new stores--in Newark, Brockport, Penfield and Victor--were part of a five-year plan targeting growth, new product areas and upgraded internal-processing systems.
