The YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta Inc. will break ground Sept. 14 on a new $11.8 million facility, revitalizing space once occupied by public housing on Pryor Road in south Atlanta.
The 46,000-square-foot Villages at Carver Family YMCA will be operated jointly by the Metro Atlanta and Butler Street YMCAs, and will include an 8-acre Atlanta Braves Baseball Academy with four sports fields named for popular players such as Chipper Jones. The academy is scheduled to open in fall 2005.
This is the third YMCA built in a restored inner-city community as part of a collaboration between the Atlanta Housing Authority (AHA) and the Metro Atlanta YMCA
The two are now working together at what was once the Carver Homes public housing project, which is being transformed by Carver Redevelopment LLC into the 105-acre mixed-income Villages at Carver community by Carver, a joint venture of The Integral Group LLC and H.J. Russell & Co.
