Abstract

A company interested in purchasing a printer should consider where and how it will be used before it is bought. The printer must be both hardware- and software-compatible. A growing number and variety of typefaces are available and are offered in 3 forms - resident, cartridge, and downloadable fonts. The primary business uses for computer printers are data processing, word processing, desktop publishing, and industrial graphics. A light workload ranges from 2,000 to 3,000 pages per month while a heavy workload is considered to be 10,000-30,000 pages per month. A printer used for light data processing should offer simple paper handling and should print both spreadsheets and text. For light word processing workloads, the printer should be able to quickly switch from fanfold paper to a single sheet or envelope. Recommendations also are made for industrial graphics and desktop publishing applications.
