DONATIONS OF $20 MILLION AND SELECtion of Rotterdam-based architect Rem Koolhaas, both announced this month, put the $25-million student center at the Mies van der Rohe-designed Illinois Institute of Technology on track for completion by 2000.
The Koolhaas concept calls for a one-story concrete-and-glass building, with a rectangular footprint, spanning under Chicago's elevated rail tracks. A metal tube on the roof is designed to block out the train noise.
Groundbreaking is expected late this year or early in 1999. But...
