LA CRISIS DE 1929 EN AMÉRICA LATINA: DEL VIEJO PARADIGMA AL NUEVO PARADIGMA EXPLICATIVO. ALCANCES Y LIMITACIONES

Abstract

In this essay, structured as a literature review, we study the crisis of 1929 and the depression of the 1930s in Latin America from the perspective of economic history. For reasons of space we privilege macroeconomic variables, although we believe that to understand this phenomenon non-economic variables are important as well. With the arguments put forward we hope to help discard some longstanding ideas about this topic which still permeate academic discussion in Latin America, as well as to stimulate debate in order to encourage more comparative research on this theme. First, we discuss the elements of the so-called "traditional paradigm" regarding the crisis of 1929 in Latin America, in order to clarify the constitutive elements of the "myth" of Latin American industrial take-off after the crisis of 1929. Secondly, we present the empirical results of recent research on the crisis in Latin America, to clarify the economic evolution of the region in the "entreguerre" period. On the basis of this analysis we specify the principal failings of the conventional paradigm, in order, in a third section, to lay out the fundamental aspects of a new interpretive paradigm regarding the crisis of 1929 and the depression of the 1930s in Latin America, while recognizing that further research will be crucial to achieve an in-depth comparative analysis for the subcontinent.

Resumen

En este trabajo -construido como un ensayo bibliográfico- estudiaremos la crisis de 1929 y la depresión de los años treinta en América Latina haciendo un seguimiento desde la perspectiva de la historia económica y privilegiando, por razones de espacio, las variables macroeconómicas a pesar de que creemos que para entender este fenómeno es importante estudiar también las variables extraeconómicas. Con las ideas esbozadas contribuiremos a superar algunas ideas sobre este tema que todavía permean los ambientes académicos en América Latina y, además, a generar discusión para fomentar estudios comparativos sobre esta problemática. En una primera parte, vamos a discutir los planteamientos del denominado "paradigma convencional" sobre la crisis de 1929 en América Latina, con la finalidad de detectar los elementos constitutivos del "mito" del despegue industrial latinoamericano luego de la crisis de 1929.
