As an alternative to outsourcing high technology jobs overseas, many of the largest IT organizations are opening technology centers in midsized metropolitan areas. What these markets have in common are a large underutilized technology talent pool, reasonable housing and living costs, and a strong college system.
Denver-based CIBER has opened its first 'CIBERsite' in Oklahoma City, creating 200 new jobs. The site was chosen due to its strong technical workforce, where its university system had been graduating highly skilled IT specialists. This asset, combined with a lower cost of living, inexpensive office space, and a central location, made it ideal to be able to compete with offshore technology companies.
Other factors included reduced issues with security, language, time zone, and cultural differences. Additionally, domestic workers have a better understanding of business processes, outcomes, and deliverables than those overseas. What's more, travel, expense and liaison costs are greatly...
